About
The literal meaning of Daswand is 'Tenth Part'. It refers to the act of donating ten percent of both income and time for sewa (selfless-service).
Daswand falls into Shri Guru Nanak Dev Ji's concept of 'Wand Chako' and is implicit in Guru Ji's own Shalok on ਅੰਗ(Page) - 1245 of Shri Guru Granth Sahib Ji:
ਸਲੋਕ ਮਃ ੧ ॥
सलोक मः १ ॥
Shalok, First Mehl:
ਗਿਆਨ ਵਿਹੂਣਾ ਗਾਵੈ ਗੀਤ ॥
गिआन विहूणा गावै गीत ॥
The one who lacks spiritual wisdom sings religious songs.
Wand kay Shako is one of the three main pillars of the teaching of Shri Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the founder of the Sikh faith. The other two pillars are Naam Japo and Kirat Karni. The term "Wand kay Shako" means to share ones wealth with others in the community, to give to charity, to distribute in Langar (free Kitchen) and to generally help others in the community who need help. A Sikh is expected to contribute at least 10% of their wealth/income called Daswand to the needy people of the world or to a worthy cause. This concept acknowledges the fact that everything that one receives is by God's Will or Hukam. And when one receives more than one can consume, then this gift must be shared with the community especially people who are needy and have much less than you.
Daswand is also mentioned in one of the 52 Hukams of Guru Gobind Singh as
“Daswand dena - Give one tenth of your salary. “
With the above ideals in mind, the idea of DASWAND was conceived and a Not for profit Trust was registered on 13Th October 2010 at Delhi.
